Did you know that according to the US Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for about half of a typical home’s energy usage? Did you also know that through proper planning your home's heating and cooling system can cut that amount in half?
When we discuss the building envelope we are describing the thermal boundaries of your home or the wall, floor and roof assemblies assemblies that separate inside from outside. This part of the home is extremely important when considering a high performance home. When constructing a high performance home, Comfort Craftsmen Mechanical highly recommends the use of exterior board insulation. Exterior board insulation is insulation that installs outside of the walls behind the siding and it works to create a continuous thermal break between outside and inside. This thermal break not only adds to the insulation value, but, with a little attention to detail can net a house with almost no uncontrolled air movement into the home.
External board insulation is a great first step in building a high performance home but there's still more work to do. Insulating the wall, floor and roof cavities is next on the list. Spray foam is often thought of as the top choice in insulations, and with good reason. Spray foam offers high insulation value (R value/inch) and is by far the best insulation for air sealing a home. However, because the external board insulation handles air sealing needs and bolsters the total insulation value of the house, cellulose is a great way to cut insulation costs without compromise. Cellulose is made from recycled paper products that a treated with fire retardants which make it a more environmentally friendly option compared to foam.
Part of building a high performance home is controlling airflow in and out of the house. This means that your new high performance home won't breath naturally. In order to maintain fresh, clean, healthy air in your home, ventilation is required. Comfort Craftsmen Mechanical has several solutions to get quality, efficient ventilation into your new home to ensure a healthy comfortable and efficient home.
